Which type of crystal chandelier to choose

A crystal chandelier is built from a glass body with brass components in a gold or silver finish, glass arms and bowls. It is decorated with cut crystal trimmings: almond-shaped pendants, chains of octagons, drops or pendeloques. The shape of the arms, the density of the trimmings and the finish of the metal decide how the chandelier looks in a room and how much light it scatters.

A chandelier can follow the style of a room or bring a deliberate contrast into it. How to choose the size and hanging height

As a first guide, add the length and the width of the room in metres and multiply by 8. The result is an approximate chandelier diameter in centimetres, so roughly 72 cm for a room of 4 × 5 metres. Also take the furniture, the ceiling height and the ornateness of the model into account.

Where people walk underneath, leave at least 210 cm of clear height below the chandelier. This matches the headroom required for the entrance areas of a dwelling by the Czech standard. Above a dining table, where nobody walks, the chandelier can hang lower: leave 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop so that guests can see each other across it. The most common mistake when furnishing is not a badly chosen chandelier, but buying lights one at a time. Each one is attractive on its own, yet together they never add up to a whole.

That is why the main collections also include wall lights and table and floor lamps with the same cutting, the same shape of arms and the same metal finish. Frequently asked questions

Where can I see the crystal lights in person?

Look for the “Showroom” icon on the product page: it marks the models on display in our showroom in Jablonec nad Nisou, the historic centre of Czech glassmaking.

More than 250 lights are exhibited there, at Palackého 3145/41 in the JBX Palace, so you can see their proportions, details and sparkle at close range. Selected models are also shown in the ArtCrystal gallery in the Máj department store in Prague.

How do I recognise genuine crystal?

Hold a cut trimming up to daylight and turn it slowly. Look at its clarity, its shine and the rainbow reflections, which are characteristic of cut crystal.

The daylight test alone will not confirm authenticity, however; what decides is documented origin and the composition of the material. ArtCrystal Tomeš lights are made in the Czech Republic from genuine Bohemian crystal and carry our guarantee of a genuine crystal chandelier.

How do I clean a crystal chandelier?

Use a cleaner intended for crystal chandeliers and follow the instructions for both the light and the cleaner.

Switch off the relevant circuit breaker before cleaning and let the bulbs cool down. The cleaning agent must not get into the lamp holders or any electrical parts, and the chandelier should be switched on again only once it is completely dry.

Can I use energy-saving LED bulbs in a crystal chandelier?

Yes. Crystal chandeliers with replaceable bulbs can be fitted with LED sources. When choosing, follow the cap type, the dimensions of the bulb and the maximum wattage stated for the particular light.

Can a crystal chandelier be dimmed?

Yes. On models with replaceable bulbs it comes down to the light sources and the controls you choose. To dim from a wall dimmer you need LED bulbs marked as dimmable and a dimmer that is compatible with them. Simply swapping the bulbs for ordinary LEDs is not enough.
