Modern lighting by the way it is used

A modern light can be a bold single piece, a quiet addition or part of a considered composition. Choose it by the height of the ceiling, by what it has to light, and by how much attention you want it to draw in the room.

— Modern Ceiling Lights — a compact answer for lower ceilings and for rooms where you want to keep the space under the fitting clear.

— Modern Pendant Lighting — single pendants and multi-part arrangements above an island, a dining table or a staircase; on selected models the cable can be set to as much as two metres.

When one light is not enough

Above a kitchen island or a longer table, two or three smaller pendants often work better than one large chandelier. Always relate their number, their spacing and the drop to the length of the worktop, to where people sit, and to the ceiling height. Where people walk through, comfortable clearance has to remain below the fitting; above a table, by contrast, the light may hang lower and create a more intimate zone.

Pendants can follow a regular rhythm, or differ in length and form a looser composition. That suits a staircase, a gallery space or a kitchen island in particular. See how interior designer Yana Vyshnevska works with size, proportion and the character of a room.

Glass, metal and handwork

What is most interesting about this collection is how old craft meets new technology in it. Hand-blown glass globes with cut trimmings inside them stand next to brass filigree cut by laser.

You will recognise the glassmaker's hand above all in the shapes taken from nature: furnace-worked glass formed at the furnace into the petals of a snowdrop, hand-formed leaves lit from above, or compositions of monstera leaves. Every such piece is an original — two identical ones never come out of the furnace.

The second part of the collection rests on precision: cylinders of ribbed glass, geometric prisms, circular bases of polished brass in a gold or silver finish. The metal parts are laser-cut and polished, so the edges are sharp and the surface even.

Often the two meet in one fitting — a laser-cut brass frame with trimmings tied by hand onto fine wires.

A light as part of the interior

A modern light can stay in the background or take over the whole room. Smooth glass globes, simple geometric shapes and clear trimmings brighten a space and soften hard surfaces — concrete, metal, stone and plain furniture. If you want the fitting to be seen, reach for coloured glass, hand-blown elements or pronounced brass.

From the proposal to the installation

With an arrangement of several fittings it is not only a question of choosing the model. From photographs and the dimensions of the room we prepare a layout proposal and a free visualisation, so that you can see how the proportions, the drop lengths and the metal finish will work.

Nothing quite right for you? A light can be adapted — the size, the number of elements and the metal finish can all be changed — or made entirely to your own design; a drawing or a photograph is enough. We send the proposal with a visualisation within a week, simpler alterations take 3–4 weeks, a bespoke light 8–10 weeks.

Installation is carried out by our own technicians.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see modern lighting in person?

Look for the „Showroom“ icon on the product page — it marks the models on display at the showroom in Jablonec nad Nisou, the historic centre of Czech glassmaking.

An arrangement of several fittings above an island or a table can only be judged in person: the spacing, the drop lengths and the way the glass behaves against the light. At the Máj department store in Prague you can also see modern chandeliers in the Fly Vista restaurant.

How do I choose a modern light above a kitchen island?

Start with the length and width of the island, the ceiling height and the places where you stand or sit at it. Above a longer island, an arrangement of two or three pendants usually works better, because it spreads the light across the whole surface.

Set the height so that the fitting blocks neither the view nor movement, while still lighting the worktop properly. We will help with the number, the spacing and the drop lengths in the visualisation.

How many lights should go into one arrangement?

It depends on the length of the surface you are lighting, on the size of the individual fittings and on how much light you want. Two or three identical pendants read calmly and rhythmically; elements of differing lengths make a looser, more sculptural composition.

With more striking models, fewer pieces are often enough. We always judge the layout in relation to the whole interior.

How long should the drop of a light be?

Above a dining table or an island a fitting can hang lower, because you do not walk underneath it. In a hallway, on a staircase or in an open space, comfortable headroom has to be kept instead.

On selected pendant models the cable can be set to as much as two metres. We confirm the exact length from photographs and the dimensions of your room.

What glass are modern lights made of?

It depends on the model. You will find hand-blown furnace-worked glass, ribbed and smooth glass, frosted elements and cut crystal trimmings — often in a single fitting.

The material is stated in the description of every light.

What bulbs are used in modern lights?

Most often G9, then E14, and GU10 in spot models. The smaller G9 sources are often placed directly inside the glass elements. A few fittings have an LED source built into the body — in those the bulb is not replaced.

The exact cap type and the maximum wattage are given in the specifications of every light.

Can a modern light be dimmed?

On models with replaceable bulbs, yes. You need LED bulbs marked as dimmable and a dimmer intended for LED — an ordinary dimmer for incandescent bulbs is not enough and can cause flickering.

Check the specifications of the particular fitting before ordering; we will gladly recommend a suitable combination.

How is a modern light cleaned?

More easily than a traditional chandelier. Smooth glass globes and cylinders only need wiping with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and trimmings enclosed inside glass elements need no cleaning at all. Do not use coarse cloths on frosted surfaces, as fingerprints stay on them.

Always switch off the circuit breaker and let the bulbs cool before cleaning.
